The purpose of this page is to enable the coaches to communicate directly with the players. Help the players be better prepared for practices and games.

Players and Positions

We believe that players learn best when they play the same position for multiple weeks in a row. We also believe it is important for the fifth grade player to learn how to play multiple positions. With this in mind, it is our intent to have "standard" player position assignments for the first 3-4 weeks. Then, with some input from the players, we will move players around and go another 3-4 weeks in new positions to widen their understanding of the game.

Style of Play

Roma has two basic style of play that we will implement this season with supporting formations. The first is a High-Press and Mid-Block style of play. With this style we strive to regain possession of the ball in the opponent's half of the field. From there we quickly attack to goal or we play it around trying to create a scoring opportunity in the scoring zone. The scoring zone is right in front of the goal the width of the 6 and the length from the goal to the 18. Shooting from within here gives us the best chance to score.

Our second style of play is Low-Block to Counter-Attack. In this style we drop back bringing the opponent and the ball towards our defending third of the field. We then gain possession of the ball about 10 yards above our 18 and rapidly counter-attack into the scoring zone.

We have a different formation for each style.

Formations and Players

We will use these two formations with these general player position assignments. I failed to mention this early, but to facilitate player development as the season progresses we will generally move players around a little bit. We do this for a variety of reasons. The first is to hold players in one position long enough for them to get comfortable with that positions offensive and defensive responsibilities across the different styles of play we are using. Secondly, we are looking to find what our most effective combinations of players is. We want to once again find out offensively and defensively who plays well with him. So, we will do one set of player assignments for the first 3 weeks or so and then rotate. After another 3 weeks or so we will rotate again.
